For the Kids in WNC

Here are my WNC recommendations that are particularly kid-friendly! I have three kids under 10 and I’m always looking for ways to keep everyone busy and having fun.

Grovemont Park – Community-Owned Park in Swannanoa, NC

Tucked away in Swannanoa, there’s a sweet little area called Grovemont. It’s home to Grovemont Park and Fox Creek Park, two community-owned green spaces. They are maintained by the Swannanoa Community Council, a completely volunteer body. If you’ve ever been to the Swannanoa Library, you’ve been to Grovemont!

@rundainwnc AND THE MOUNTAIN VIEWS 🤩 Learn more about Grovemont Park and find links to donate here: grovemontpark.org Psst…know someone who wants to volunteer doing social media content? Reach out to the Swannanoa Community Council via the website or IG #swannanoa #swannanoanc #828isgreat #asheville #blackmountain ♬ original sound – Runda in WNC

Grovemont Park

In addition to the Swannanoa Library, Grovemont Park has a playground, outdoor exercise equipment, rubber track, field, basketball court, pavilion, and picnic tables. During the summer, you have to check out Groovin’ on Grovemont, a free admission concert series with musical guests, food trucks, and great fun for all ages.

The series is sponsored by local businesses and community members, with proceeds benefiting the Swannanoa Community Council and Friends and Neighbors of Swannanoa (FANS). In 2026, the concerts will be held on July 14, July 18, and August 11 at 6 PM!

Fox Creek Park

In addition to Grovemont Park, the Swannanoa Community Council also maintains Fox Creek Park, a “walking path, wildlife habitat and educational resource for our community on the former site of Lake June in Grovemont.” Check out the website linked for video tours, ways to volunteer, and more information about habitat restoration.

Support the Work of the Swannanoa Community Council

Maintaining these grounds for the community’s benefit takes time and resources. Consider making a one-time or recurring donation here. During the 2026 season, Runda in WNC is one of the sponsors of Groovin’ on Grovemont. I’m so excited to support community-minded work and hope you will join me!

Spring Market Day, Poetry Reading, and Making Time for My Voice

I have no business making several TikToks a day, writing blog articles, carving out time to visit new fun spots in Western North Carolina, or writing poetry in my notes app and revising and revising. I already have a busy and full life of family and work that is meaningful. And yet, this season I have felt called to create and connect. There is something about the joy I am experiencing from meeting new people in my community, writing new poems, taking an art class, etc. that is keeping me grounded and rediscovering my own voice within the busy busy days.

In the next two weeks, I’m taking advantage of two opportunities to be out in the community and creating. These are opportunities to expand beyond my online world and the occasional coffee meetings with strangers (aka neighbors I hadn’t met yet). I hope to see you in-person!

@rundainwnc Join me at two upcoming community events: 1. I’m hosting a FREE all ages craft (we’re making recycled paper flowers!) Saturday, April 18 from 9-3 @ the Vessels Spring Market at Short Sleeves in Swannanoa. Specifically, I’ll be set up in front of Mountain Cycle Works next door 2. I’m reading a new poem “Foundations of Bricks and Roots” at the Swannanoa Artists’ Collective opening reception – Friday, April 24 at 6 PM at 216 Whitson Ave. The poem and artwork by amazing local folks will be on display the 25th-26th. Hope to see you! 🩷 -Runda (in WNC) #swannanoa #blackmountain #asheville #828isgreat #westernnorthcarolina ♬ original sound – Runda in WNC

VESSELS Spring Market @ Short Sleeves Coffee in Swannanoa, NC | Saturday, April 18, 2026 | 9AM-3PM

Last winter, my daughters saw a sign up in Short Sleeves Coffee in Swannanoa advertising their first ever vendor market and sharing that applications were open. The kids were thrilled and asked if they could apply to be vendors as they considered themselves the “kid art factory” at home. They were accepted and one of few kids running booths at the market, they made $100 (which felt like one million) and we had a wonderful albeit cold day.

When it came time for the next market set for this Saturday, I had an idea – “Why don’t I apply to have a table?” I dabble in all types of arts and crafts, but not to a level in which I could sell items. But, I am at my core a teacher and so I reached out asking whether I could host an all ages craft for free. To my delight, the team was just as excited as I was.

I really believe in making space and opportunity for folks of all backgrounds to enjoy community time together. Absolutely patron the small businesses and artists if you can! Also, it feels good to offer folks a reason to come by without any economic pressure. Let’s just exist together and create something beautiful.

The VESSELS Spring Market is this Saturday, April 18th from 9AM-3PM and will be set up mostly in front of Short Sleeves Coffee in Swannanoa but also spilling over into the front area of Mountain Cycle Works. At my table, I’ll have all the materials necessary to create flowers out of recycled paper. My table will be directly in front of Mountain Cycle Works and it’s totally free!

Swannanoa Artists’ Collective Poetry Reading “Foundations of Bricks and Roots” | Friday, April 24, 2026 6 PM (Opening Reception) | April 25-26 Open Gallery

The very next week, I will be reading a new poem called “Foundations of Bricks and Roots” at a Swannanoa Artists’ Collective show. You can hear me read at the opening reception on Friday, April 24th at 6 PM at 216 Whitson Avenue in Swannanoa. The poem will also be on display along with other works of art and literature by many talented artists for the weekend. The theme of the show is “Rebirth.”

WNC Spring Break on a Budget: Black Mountain, NC

For many of us in Western North Carolina, it is Spring Break for our kids. No school for 9 days! Exciting and daunting. How do we keep our kids busy and having fun without breaking the bank? What if you can’t afford to go to the beach or Gatlinburg or pay for camp? This week, I’ll be sharing some advice for how to keep your kids having fun right here in Western North Carolina. “Budget” varies widely from family to family, so I’ll cover ideas that are completely free and some that have a small cost associated with them. Psst…if you don’t know about ZOOM Passes from the library, check this out.

black mountain, north carolina on a budget

Black Mountain, North Carolina is so close to where I live in Swannanoa that it really feels like an extension of my home base. There are so many no spend or low spend things to do in Black Mountain and I’m excited to share them with you!

Here are some ideas for how to explore Black Mountain on a budget:

Lake Tomahawk, Black Mountain

I’m a HUGE Lake Tomahawk fan. Anytime we have a bit of free time between errands I will suggest stopping here. Lake Tomahawk in Black Mountain has a paved loop around the lake (gorgeous mountain views), a playground including swings, pavilion, and more. I have a full write up about the lake here.

Robert Lake Park, Montreat

I know I just said I had a favorite park with water close by…but Robert Lake Park in Montreat is also my favorite. This park has creeks running through it (both shallow and deeper). There’s a big playground, swings, a smaller playground with a boat and climbing wall, picnic tables, and more!

Parking Tip: If you use your GPS on it’s own, it can be a little tricky to find the park. I use Community Center Circle (Montreat) instead of Texas Drive in the GPS. Park your car to the left, walk across the street and you’ll see a building and in the right hand corner there is a ramp that leads to the park:

Black Mountain Library

There is a lot to love about the Black Mountain Library. Inside, the children’s library selection also has fun small toys. You can check out games like giant jenga in the main library. And you don’t want to skip the books for sale section!

Little Free Library Crawl

I LOVE a Little Free Library and they are all over Black Mountain. To make a fun day of it, have you child select a few books from home that they’re ready to part with and then drive around town and swap it for one from the LFL. There are two side-by-side libraries at Lake Tomahawk, one in Black Mountain Town Square, and one in front of the Black Mountain YMCA. Know of others? Leave a comment below.

Black Mountain Town Square

Black Mountain Town Square is a cute spot right in the center of Black Mountain. There’s easy and free parking in front of the fire station. During the summer, you’ll want to come back for the splash pad! This spring, take a look at the great work of the Black Mountain Beautification Committee. Perhaps bring a sketch pad or camera to take photos of the flowers or draw a sketch of the fountain. Sit on the big (and small) rocking chairs! There’s also picnic tables next to the splash pad.

Swannanoa Valley Museum

The Swannanoa Valley Museum is in downtown Black Mountain. The suggested donation is $5 for admission. This spot is on my list to visit soon and according to their website “preserves and interprets the social, cultural, and natural history of the Swannanoa Valley, a pathway to western North Carolina, by developing dynamic programs and engaging exhibitions for the education and enrichment of the community, its children, and future generations.”

Play a Game at Dynamite Coffee

Dynamite Coffee in Black Mountain has a wonderful big porch outside. Grab a drink and a game from the cart for a fun hour out in the sunshine.

Play and Drink Hot Chocolate at Peri Social House

Peri Social House is not just a cute hotel, it’s also a coffee shop open to the public. They’ve got a kid’s hot chocolate for $4.01 (including tax) as well as regular coffee and pastry offerings. Don’t forget to check out the outside patio where there are toy trucks, grassy area to play, and baby swings (this is to the left of the house if you’re looking at it, there’s also outdoor tables and chairs on the right side accessible from the main room).

Recess at Recess Coffee

Recess is a phenomenal coffee shop in downtown Black Mountain, read my full review here. Grab a hot chocolate or snack and sit outside. There is a seesaw, tunnel, and other small playground toys on a grassy patch outside.

Snack/Toy Stop at Hopey

Hopey & Company is a large discount grocery store in Black Mountain. In the front of the store there is what I call the “fun” section. There are toys, kid’s items, make up, season items, etc. at a deep discount. Stop by for a fun purchase and browse the yummy well-priced snacks!

The Old Depot Gallery

The Old Depot Gallery is right next to the bright red train car in downtown Black Mountain. Check out the train car and then go into the gallery. There are three main rooms with several low cost items like bookmarks and little pin buttons.

Bear Hunt in Downtown Black Mountain

Until April 14th, 2026 there is a Kid’s “Bear Hunt” happening in downtown Black Mountain. Grab a map from a participating location and kids can go to each store to search for the stuffed bear. Once they’ve found it, they get their card stamped. When you fill up your card, return it to the Chamber of Commerce to be entered for a prize. Even if you don’t finish the card or even turn it in, your kids will have fun looking for the bear!

Sweet Treat: The Hop, Pelican’s, Kilwin’s

There are plenty of sweet treats to be had in Black Mountain! Here’s the lowest cost options available (these prices include tax and are reflective of today’s posting date).

The Hop Ice Cream Kid’s Scoop is $4

Pelican’s Kid’s SnoBall is $4.28 and Kid’s Ice Cream Scoop is $3.75

Kilwin’s Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rod is $2.12 and Kid’s Ice Cream Scoop is $4.85

Swannanoa, north carolina on a budget

I love my little small town of Swannanoa and despite what some might think, we do have things to do here! In fact, many residents have playfully started to say we are “swanna-somewhere” — a reclamation of the tired “swanna-nowhere” nickname.

Here are some ideas for how to explore Swannanoa on a budget:

Swannanoa Library and Park (251 Stonewall Ave, Swannanoa, NC)

Tucked into the Grovemont Community in Swannanoa is a public library and park. This is one of my favorite library/park combinations in Buncombe County. The park has a playground, soccer field/green space, basketball court, and exercise stations.

Good Company Pizza Arcade (2334 U.S. 70, Swannanoa, NC)

Good Company Pizza in Swannanoa is a full restaurant and has an entire half dedicated to an arcade and gelato stand. The game room includes air hockey, arcade games, claw machines, etc. I have found the games to be reasonable/winnable – my kids had a great time! You can find my full review here.

@rundainwnc I can’t believe I’ve been driving all the way to North Asheville to do arcade and pizza with the kids when this is a mile from my house 😅 Thanks @Good Company Pizza! #828isgreat #swannanoa #blackmountain #asheville #westernnorthcarolina ♬ original sound – Runda in WNC

Cherry Tree Beads (202 Railroad St, Swannanoa, NC)

Does your family enjoy crafts? Cherry Tree Beads is a paradise of beads and string and all the accessories. To keep it budget, consider purchasing one or two strands or doing a fill your own bag of beads.

@rundainwnc I am an enabler. Let your crafty heart be full and check out @Cherry Tree Beads in Swannanoa! (Not local? They sell online, too.) While you’re at it, you can grab a coffee from Short Sleeves, a pretzel from Blunt Pretzel, some groceries from The Rite Buy, and pretty soon the hardware store will be opened up too. We are Swanna-somewhere, indeed ❤️ #swannanoa #asheville #westernnorthcarolina #828isgreat #crafty ♬ original sound – Runda in WNC

Hiking near Warren Wilson College

Unfortunately, Owen Park will remain closed for a number of years due to Hurricane Helene. However, there are several walking and hiking trails on the Warren Wilson College campus. You should be able to learn more on the AllTrails website or app.

Cafe & Kid’s Toys: Blunt Pretzel (120 Alexander Place, Swannanoa, NC), Short Sleeves Coffee (222 Whitson Ave, Swannanoa, NC), Moments Coffee (2304 US-70, Swannanoa, NC)

Many of our local coffee/food shops are kid-friendly. At Blunt Pretzel, there is a cart of board games. Short Sleeves Coffee has magnet tiles, books, and puzzles. Moments Coffee has a bookshelf, fire truck, and other small toys.

Lunch Special Spotlight: La Bamba & Athens Grille

There are many wonderful places to eat in Swannanoa! Two of my favorite budget options are La Bamba and Athens Grille. Both restaurants have daily lunch specials and kid menus.

@rundainwnc It’s rare to find a filling meal for $4.99 and it not be from a drive thru! If you’re looking for a budget meal in Swannanoa or a good cup of coffee and dessert, check out: La Bamba Restaurant 2298 US 70, Swannanoa Moments Coffee Bar and Eatery 2304 US 70, Swannanoa #swannanoa #blackmountain #asheville #828isgreat #wnc ♬ original sound – Runda in WNC
@rundainwnc Have you been to Athens Grille in Swannanoa since they moved locations? Tonight was one of those nights that I needed to get the kids a quick meal and for my sanity something they would eat with no complaints. Athens Grille has Greek dishes and then also burgers, hot dogs, etc. 10/10 Sweet Tea! Spanakopita was crispyyyy! Happy kids! #swannanoa #blackmountain #828isgreat #westernnorthcarolina #asheville ♬ Nice and Easy – Louis Adrien

Buckeye Antiques Mall (90 Buckeye Access Rd, Swannanoa, NC)

Right off of Exit 59 is Buckeye Antiques Mall. This is a massive booth style antique and odds and ends store. Don’t forget to check out the back book room that also has some low discount items.

@rundainwnc What are your favorite antique stores in Western North Carolina? I could go antiquing every weekend forever and never get bored. #828isgreat #westernnorthcarolina #swannanoa #asheville #blackmountain ♬ Spring of peace – Heitor Tremblay

Special Snack: Papaw’s Place (2632 US-70, Swannanoa, NC)

Papaw’s Place is one of Swannanoa’s newest businesses. While it’s mainly a feed store, it’s also a fun spot for kids to get a bag of chips, candy, or an ice cream. It’s fun to see the old time decorations and big fireplace.

@rundainwnc Check out Swannanoa’s newest business – Papaw’s Place! This feed, produce, and local products shop is on 70 between Asheville and Black Mountain. #swannanoa #blackmountain #asheville #828isgreat #westernnorthcarolina ♬ original sound – Runda in WNC

Canton, north carolina on a budget

Last week, I spent a rare solo day exploring Canton, NC. It’s about a half hour drive from where I live in Swannanoa. And in the five hours I was in town, I was able to do a lot and still not scratch off all of the exciting ideas my social media followers suggested.

Here are some ideas for how to explore Canton on a budget:

@rundainwnc Caveat that I know gas prices are high and cost of food (even at home) is high too! Hoping this will generate some ideas to keep the spring break fun going and affirm for you that you DON’T have to go on a major vacation or travel hours for memorable experiences 🩷 Canton Spring Break Ideas: 🛝Play, stroll, picnic @ Canton Rec Park 👾 $1 Comic Books and Claw Machine @ Geek Mountain 📕 Free & Discount Books and Puzzles @ Blue Moon Books 🍳 Biscuits @ The Grateful Table Honorable mention for Budgie’s Bake Shop in Candler which is pay what you can. Depending on where you’re driving from it may or may not make sense but you should follow them either way! I’ve also heard great things about the Enka Candler Library but it’s closed until after the Easter holiday. Other free and budget things to do in Canton, NC? Share in th comments! ‏ #springbreak #westernnorthcarolina #828isgreat #asheville #canton ♬ original sound – Runda in WNC

😎 Canton Recreation Park (77 Penland Street, Canton, NC)

The Canton Recreation Park is just a couple of streets over from downtown Canton. There’s a paved parking lot and on one side you’ll find a playground, picnic table pavilions, a grassy open area, and the pool (not open for the season yet). On the other side of the parking lot are tennis and basketball courts. Running alongside the park is a paved walking trail following the Pigeon River.

@rundainwnc I loved checking out a new (to me) park just before Spring Break. This Canton park has it all – a big playground, green space, picnic tables, fishing holes, paved walking path, benches, tennis court, basketball court, and dog park! #828isgreat #canton #westernnorthcarolina #asheville #candler ♬ original sound – Runda in WNC

👾 Geek Mountain (338 Main St, Canton, NC)

Geek Mountain is a self-proclaimed store for the nerds in your life. In addition to many cool games, accessories, manga, clothes, etc. there are some budget options! Inside is a claw machine, $1 comic books, and pay what you can canned soda.

📕 Blue Moon Books (109 Main St, Canton, NC)

Blue Moon Books is a used bookstore on Main Street. Inside, you’ll find chess and a puzzle set up to play. Rows and rows of used books, including many $1 and free books. Under the local authors table, you can find used games and puzzles too!

🍳 The Grateful Table (473 Main St, Canton, NC)

The Grateful Table is a great place to grab a snack to take to the park. You can check out the small items and baked goods on display or perhaps order a few biscuits and jam. If you decide to eat in, there’s a small basket of toys appropriate for small kids.

Honorable mention for Budgie’s Bake Shop in Candler which is a pay what you can bakery. Depending on where you’re driving from it may or may not make sense but you should follow them either way! I’ve also heard great things about the Enka Candler Library but it’s closed until after the Easter holiday.

1 Hour in Black Mountain: Abbiocco Pizzeria, Peri Social House, and Lake Tomahawk

Western North Carolina visitors don’t get to have all the fun! As locals, sometimes it can be hard to find time to explore new places because we think we need to dedicate an entire day. But whole days of freedom are hard to come by, even on the weekend. Here’s one example of how you can carve out an hour or two and enjoy a fun spot in Black Mountain. First, let me introduce the cast (scroll down for the itinerary):

Peri Social House is a gorgeous boutique hotel on State Street just before you get to downtown Black Mountain (coming from Swannanoa). If you don’t already know about this cool spot, follow them here where they list fun events like silent reading parties, author talks, craft nights, and more! Their downstairs is also open to the public and it’s a great spot to grab a coffee and hang out.

Abbiocco Pizzeria is wood-fired pizza truck that is parked at Peri Social House Thursdays-Sundays. They’ve also started selling their frozen pizza at local stores like Beradu Market and The Rite Buy. You can follow the truck here and the frozen pizza spots here.

Lake Tomahawk is just around the corner from Peri Social House. There’s a cute playground, a loop around the lake, and mountain views. I love it so much I wrote a whole post about it here.

@rundainwnc Mini-itinerary alert! I spent most of Sunday cleaning but that didn’t mean we couldn’t carve out one hour of fun. Abbiocco Pizzeria has their truck @PeriSocialHouse Thursdays-Sunday. You can check their website for hours and for the link if you want to order ahead. Lake Tomahawk is just around the corner. A slight twist on this itinerary is to stay and eat it there! Peri has a great patio on both sides of the house and lots of space indoors. There’s also a toddler play area. Can’t make it to the truck? Abbiocco now has their pizzas in the frozen section in stores like The Rite Buy, Beradu, and others. Follow @Abbiocco At Home | Frozen 🍕 Have fun! #blackmountain #blackmountainnc #828isgreat #westernnorthcarolina #asheville ♬ original sound – Runda in WNC

Itinerary for Busy Folks (adjust if you’ve got the luxury of time):

  • Pack a picnic blanket and your own drinks
  • Order ahead on the Abbiocco website
  • Park at Peri Social House and head to the right of the building. Parking lot full? There’s usually some nearby lots that you can park and do a quick walk and back to your car.
  • Drive to Lake Tomahawk, if there’s not parking in the main lot there usually is some in front of the Black Mountain Pool next door.
  • Find a spot for your blanket and enjoy your pizza! If you’ve got time, walk around the loop once or twice or three times. Look for the heron (or maybe it’s an egret).

Other Ideas

  • Order your pizza at the truck and stay at Peri Social House to eat! There’s plenty of space on the front porch, patio, and inside. They’ve got coffee and drinks, you don’t have to bring your own. There’s also a fenced in play area perfect for young kids – swings and dump trucks galore.
  • Follow your outing with yummy dessert in downtown Black Mountain.

Recess Coffee and Baked Goods: School-Themed Coffee Shop in Black Mountain, NC

Recess Coffee and Baked Goods is a locally-owned, beloved coffee shop nestled by the railroad tracks in downtown Black Mountain, North Carolina. It’s just minutes from Montreat and about 15-20 minutes from Asheville and known not just for its coffee menu but specialty pastries and bread and unique school-theme.

The first time I visited this Black Mountain coffee shop was to meet up with a friend and coworker who was in town visiting family in Montreat. She asked if I had been to Recess, and when I said no, insisted that we check it out (this friend also introduced me to Robert Lake Park, she’s a real one).

What a fun surprise it was to see that the coffee shop is school-themed! As a former teacher and someone who still works closely with school workers, I am a big fan of school. My kids were with me and they immediately locked eyes with the bleachers and started climbing up and down. Every time I go, I notice something new (psst…check out what the pastry case is sitting on).

Unique Drinks and Fresh Baked Goods

Recess Coffee and Baked Goods goes well beyond the typical light pastries found in most coffee shops and offers delicious and artistic creations. The croissants and eclairs and breads are often seasonal – so you’ve got to snag one before they’re gone. The same goes for the Recess coffee menu – a strong base menu that has a rotation of specialty drinks.

@rundainwnc I definitely recommend making a longer itinerary if you’re going to Recess for coffee, there are so many fun shops and galleries in downtown Black Mountain! #blackmountain #asheville #828isgreat #westernnorthcarolina #coffee ♬ original sound – Runda in WNC

That first experience was so bright – I remember sitting in the warm sun on the patio catching up with my friend while the kids drew on the concrete with sidewalk chalk. The patio door opened and what surprise and delight I felt at the giant croissant with gold flakes!

Parking at Recess Coffee in Black Mountain

There are a few spots beside Recess to park and street parking. However, if you’re like me and find street parking anxiety-inducing, I recommend trying to snag a spot on Sutton Avenue either in front of the old rail car or the small lot across from the train tracks and then walking over.

Patio Seating, Kids, and Dog-Friendly Space

Recess Coffee and Baked Goods has an outdoor patio with seating and a small patch of grass. There’s usually a water bowl for dogs, too. My kids love to run around out there and draw with chalk. Inside, there’s a shelf of games and the big star for the kids – bleachers!

What’s your favorite treat or drink from Recess? Let me know in the comments!

Good Company Pizza in Swannanoa, NC: Family-Friendly Pizza, Arcade Games & Gelato

I’ve driven past Good Company Pizza in Swannanoa (near Asheville, North Carolina) anywhere from four to six times a day for years without ever going in. My bad! Recently, I noticed new signs went up advertising gelato and arcade games and as the mom of three small kids, realized that it was about time to go check it out.

From the outside, you might think that there are just a couple of machines and tables but Good Company Pizza is surprisingly spacious! We went yesterday after being snowed in for four days and had a blast.

Arcade & Games

You walk into the restaurant at the kitchen and takeout counter. On the right is a big room with tables, soda machines, and a couple of claw machine type games. On the left is an equally big room with tables, ice hockey, and a variety of arcade games, claw machines, shooter type games, etc. Most games cost $1 and there is a machine to exchange cash for quarters. There’s also a gelato bar that’s open in the evening.

If you’ve ever taken little kids into an arcade, you know that going somewhere with every claw machine and game being nearly impossible to win is worse than not going at all. I really appreciated Good Company Pizza has an egg claw machine that was easy for younger kids and my kids were extremely excited about their tiny trinkets.

Pizza, Subs, and Amazing Ranch

And what about the food? The kids got their standard cheeze pizza and I tried the Philly chicken sub. Both were great and based on the comments on my TikTok video, the other menu items are popular! I also asked for a cup of ranch and boy am I glad that I did. It was so good that I thought about drinking the extra in the cup.

Swannanoa is the Place to Be!

It’s so nice to have things to do in Swannanoa. As much as I love spots like Asheville Pizza on Merrimon, I don’t always want to drive all the way to North Asheville. It’s exciting to see our local spots get creative in adding more value to the community. We are Swanna-somewhere indeed!

Lake Tomahawk in Black Mountain

@rundainwnc

Celebrating September with this video of a lil walk in Black Mountain! I dearly miss my Owen Park but until it reopens, I think I’ll be spending a lot more time here. What’s your favorite paved walk in Buncombe County?

♬ September – Earth, Wind & Fire

Lake Tomahawk Park in Black Mountain has become one of my favorite regular stops for solo walks and after school play dates. Located just a few turns off of Old US 70 in Black Mountain, the park includes a .55 mile loop around the lake, a children’s playground, tennis courts, pavilion, fishing ramp, and two Little Free Libraries. Right next door to the lake is the Lakeview Senior Center and the Black Mountain Pool.

After returning to WNC full-time late Summer 2025 (after back-and-forth chaos from Hurricane Helene), I immediately felt the loss of Owen Park in Swannanoa. My “home park” isn’t expected to reopen for several years after extensive hurricane damage.

The silver lining is that I’ve become quite the regular at Lake Tomahawk! The views are breathtaking, the park is small but fun for the varied ages of my kids, and I almost always see my favorite bird, a wonderful Blue Heron (pictured below).

  1. […] Lake Tomahawk is just around the corner from Peri Social House. There’s a cute playground, a loop around the lake, and mountain views. I love it so much I wrote a whole post about it here. […]

  2. […] I’m a HUGE Lake Tomahawk fan. Anytime we have a bit of free time between errands I will suggest stopping here. Lake Tomahawk in Black Mountain has a paved loop around the lake (gorgeous mountain views), a playground including swings, pavilion, and more. I have a full write up about the lake here. […]

I recommend Peri Social House, a stunning 1936 Georgian Revival boutique hotel with a public coffee shop on the lower level, as a great pre or post lake stop for a coffee and a treat.

If you're there at just the right time, you might also catch the Black Mountain Radio Sailing Club with their remote control boats - a delightful treat to adults and kids alike!
