02/18/2026 Opening the Stacks: Black Libraries and the Struggle for Access in Buncombe County (Lecture)

On February 18th, the Swannanoa Valley Museum is hosting public historian and guest lecturer Catherine Amos to “discuss the complicated path toward library desegregation in Buncombe County, and the pivotal roles that Mrs. Hendrick [who opened and operated Asheville’s only Black library within the walls of the YMI for over three decades] and the students of ASCORE played to accomplish this historic milestone.” You are invited! Tickets are $5 for Swannanoa Valley Museum Members, $10 for General Admission, and free for Highland Farms Residents.

I’m excited to see this important history shared with our community! Follow the Swannanoa Valley Museum below and check out their website for more community learning opportunities.
